Window Cleaning- Basics You Need to Know

Window Cleaning

Window cleaning is one of the most dreaded chores among most people. However, it’s an essential part of maintaining your home or workplace’s cleanliness and appearance. Dirty windows can negatively impact the overall look of your property, so regular cleaning is necessary. Cleaning windows efficiently and effectively requires the right equipment. You will need a bucket, squeegee, scrubber, microfiber cloth, and cleaning solution. The bucket should be large enough to fit your tools comfortably while leaving room for water. A squeegee with a rubber blade will help remove water from the glass surface without leaving streaks or smudges. A scrubber with soft bristles helps loosen dirt and grime from the window surface before using a squeegee. Microfiber cloths are perfect for wiping down frames and any remaining moisture on the glass. You can option for commercial cleaners specifically designed for windows or make one at home using vinegar or dish soap diluted in water.

Workspace

Before starting with window cleaning, ensure that you’ve cleared away any obstructions around your workspace like furniture or plants near windowsills. Remove any curtains or blinds that could get wet during the process. Covering floors and surfaces below the windows may also be necessary to avoid spills and stains from dripping water during Window Cleaning.

Washing techniques

Start by filling up your bucket with warm water mixed with your preferred cleaning solution. Dip your scrubber into this mixture before wiping it across the entire surface of each glass pane thoroughly in circular motions. Use a squeegee held at an angle against one edge of each pane’s top corner as you pull it downwards across its width until all excess liquid has been removed effectively. Continue this process across each pane until all windows have been cleaned. Wipe each window’s edges with a microfiber cloth to remove residual moisture. Ensure that you’ve wiped off any water droplets on the frames or sills as well.

Tips for streak-free windows

  • Avoid washing windows in direct sunlight as it can cause the cleaning solution to dry too quickly before you can squeegee it off properly.
  • Use a clean squeegee blade after every few strokes to avoid accumulating dirt and grime on it.
  • Wipe your squeegee blade with a damp cloth before and after each use.
  • Use vertical strokes on one side of the window and horizontal strokes on the other side so that you can identify which side has streaks if they occur.
  • Avoid using newspaper or paper towels for wiping down surfaces as they may leave behind lint or fibers that will stick to glass panes.

Cleanliness standards, weather conditions, and location determine how often you should clean your windows. If you live near busy roads or construction sites, your windows may accumulate more dirt than those in quieter areas. Weather conditions like rainstorms may also affect how frequently you need to clean your windows since rainwater carries dirt particles that could attach themselves to glass surfaces.
